What should we do when our children constantly ask for sweets?

Sweets are part of our lives, since they are initially associated with social events such as celebrations, birthdays and more. What is certain is that we cannot avoid them completely, and even more so, we cannot completely deprive them especially to a child who has already "learned" them. The reason is that a complete ban may in the future bring about the opposite effects, while at the same time a child may not fully understand the impact it will have on his or her health.

Indiscriminate consumption of sweets is extremely dangerous, as they are largely responsible for the problem of obesity and other diseases such as tooth decay, especially in children. That is why parents should handle the issue properly and give the right directions to their children, setting a good example first.

Parents as a model of nutrition

As parents, you need to act as healthy and proper role models for your children and pass on the message that sweets are consumed on certain occasions, not on a daily basis. So teach children the rules of healthy eating and use fruit and/or honey for daily desserts. Don't forget also that honey can satisfy a child's sweet tooth, as well as your own!

Also, as parents, you should not have sweets, such as chocolates or biscuits, stored in your kitchen, because if you eat them yourself, your children will imitate your behaviour. Finally, don't forget that when you constantly see sweets in front of you, it's hard to eventually give in to temptation and you end up eating every day without any real need. Unfortunately, this daily habit leads to sugar addiction and the daily quest for sweets.

Control the sweets that enter the house and where they are kept so that the child does not have direct access to them, especially since there are grandparents and aunts who want to "sweeten" the child. Make them your allies and ask them to change their habits. And be careful! Don't use candy as a reward to the child because it makes the child even more desirable. A smile, a hug or a big thumbs up is enough to give your child meaningful joy!

If the child asks for a sweet, what should you give?

Assuming all of the above has been done, but the child still persistently asks for sweets, there are ways to avoid this.

Prefer fat-free sweets such as honey, spoon sweets, sweets with raw or dried fruit, jellies and popsicles.

Cover his craving for sweets with healthy snacks that have a sweet taste, such as Biscoteins of the Healthy & Tasty series. It is a low-calorie, high-fibre and low-carbohydrate biscuit treat. Also, for sweet cravings, choose the My Balance Bar of the Healthy & Tasty series that ideally balances sweet pleasure with nutritional value. MyBalanceBars are high in protein, filling and come in two unique flavours, CrunchyCaramel and LemonPie.

So are you still wondering what to do when your child keeps asking for sweets?

As part of a healthy and balanced diet, children can eat sweets, but in moderation. But remember, taste preferences are established from childhood. So always make it a priority to educate your child on healthier food choices.
